Short Course

Course Overview

Understand process safety and systems safety engineering principles and practices, and how to leverage them to achieve better system safety.

 

The course, which has been co-designed by academic and industry leaders, comprises 2 parts:

  • Part 1 introduces you to the fundamentals of process safety and systems safety, and how it can improve health and safety outcomes.
  • Part 2 takes what you have learnt and puts it into practice, critiquing key process safety approaches and applying your learnings to a case study.

Course Content

Part 1: Introduction to process safety fundamentals
Part 1 will help you:

  • explain the fundamental differences between personal safety, process safety and systems safety, and functional safety
  • describe key elements of process/systems safety management systems (PSMS) and how to assess these
  • understand how systems safety analysis can be integrated into other safety and risk management processes
  • identify opportunities for improvement.
     

Part 2: Application and critique of process safety approaches
Part 2 will help you develop skills in:

  • performing and/or critiquing the quality of key process safety approaches associated with risk assessment, risk treatment and event investigations
  • developing and assessing recommendations derived from process safety approaches
    critiquing process and identifying S.M.A.R.T improvements to process safety management systems.

Additional Details

Time commitment
This is an in-person course that will require roughly 48 hours to complete.

  • 20 hours of study using online materials
  • 4-day in-person workshop (Parts 1 and 2)
  • Part 1: 10 hours online study + day 1 and 2 of workshop
  • Part 2: 10 hours online study + day 3 and 4 of workshop
     

Assessment
Part 1 assessment will include:

  • a quiz
  • a process safety diagnostic exercise.
     

Part 2 assessment will include:

  • critiquing 2 different process safety analyses.
     

Certification and accreditation
Students who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion to verify their skills and achievements.

Prerequisites

Who should attend

  • Specialist personnel including managers, engineers and other technical specialists should attend Part 1
  • Technical specialists or management roles that oversee the application of effective process safety strategies should attend Part 2

Entry requirements

  • Part 1: There are no entry requirements to enrol in Part 1 of this course
  • Part 2: To be eligible to enrol in Part 2, you must complete Part 1 or have an existing understanding of the fundamentals of process safety
