Microsoft Excel Intermediate

Swinburne University of Technology

Short Course

Course Overview

In this one-day Excel course, participants learn intermediate Excel skills including how to use shortcuts, complex functions and relative and absolute formulas. They will be exposed to functions for financial and logical calculations, and learn useful methodologies to approach tasks in Excel with more confidence.

Participants will learn how to reduce time spent on manual tasks with Auto and Sequential fills and discover how to work with custom lists. They’ll also gain new insights faster by learning how to manipulate data with VLOOKUP, IF and PMT functions and Excel data filtering.

Microsoft Excel is a powerful tool for a range of uses, but most users only scratch the surface of its capabilities. This Excel training course helps participants ‘un-learn’ processes they may have picked up from learning Excel on the job, replacing inefficient habits them with the most efficient ways to achieve effective outcomes.

Course Content

Through this course participants will develop the skills and knowledge to:

  • Apply formulas using both relative and absolute addressing to manage data dynamically
  • Employ powerful Excel functions like VLOOKUP, IF, and PMT to perform complex data operations
  • Manipulate and organise data using sorting and filtering techniques effectively
  • Create, edit, and delete custom autofill lists to streamline repetitive tasks.

Introduction to Excel Intermediate

  • Detailed exploration of the Excel interface including tabs, groups, and commands

Advanced Autofill Techniques

  • Using the fill handle for sequential and non-sequential data entry
  • Creating and managing custom lists for autofill to speed up data entry across commonly used terms

Formatting Data Accurately

  • Setting up and applying custom date formats to data entries
  • Utilising the Format Cells dialog to apply formatting to numerical data for better clarity and presentation

Formula Construction and Management

  • Constructing and applying formulas using relative addressing for dynamic calculations across datasets
  • Employing absolute addressing in formulas to maintain consistent references during data expansion

Organising Data with Sorting and Filtering

  • Implementing AutoFilter for specific data views and performing complex filters to meet precise criteria

Advanced Data Manipulation

  • Subtotal Calculations: using the SUBTOTAL function in filtered lists to summarise data
  • Custom filtering: setting up and applying custom numeric filters to isolate data within specified ranges
