High Pressure High Temperature - Crew Training

Stuart Wright Pte Ltd

Short Course

Course Overview

High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) Crew Training course is specifically designed for rig crews, including company personnel, drilling contractors, and contractors working in HPHT well environments.

The course prepares participants for safe and efficient HPHT well operations, ensuring all key rig crew team members including derrickman / AD / Driller / Tool pusher / Senior Service crew  are fully equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to monitor and manage wellbore behavior and prevent downtime delays due to well control incidents or equipment malfunction. This training can be and has been integrated with MPD training which by itself does not cover wellbore behavior and the critical needs for rig crew to maintain their vigilance and management of well control incident prevention.

This HPHT crew training course can be added to your operator’s onshore crew induction program before crew mobilization and most importantly repeated onsite. The training content typically lasts for one day.

Course Content

Course Objectives

Upon completing this HPHT Rig Crew Training, crew will achieve the following key learning outcomes:

  • Understanding the complex nature of HPHT wells, including the challenges posed by narrow operational margins, extreme pressure, and temperature conditions.
  • Gaining insight into typical HPHT wellbore behaviour to minimize well control incidents during well construction, and their specific roles in incident prevention.
  • Developing awareness of HPHT drilling guidelines and procedures to ensure safe and efficient operations.
  • Recognizing the unique risks associated with HPHT operations and how to manage them effectively.
  • Learning about the importance of using appropriate rig equipment specifically designed for HPHT wells.
  • Gaining the necessary knowledge to handle well control issues in HPHT environments.

Why Attend

HPHT rig crew training is critical to reducing risks and improving safety and performance during high-pressure, high-temperature drilling operations. HPHT wells are rare and terminology is different to conventional wells, as is wellbore behavior and the  tools and techniques are different to manage them. This training familiarizes crews with HPHT well behavior and uncertainties and how to manage them and their individual responsibilities.

By attending this course, your team will:

  • Enhance wellbore monitoring skills to prevent costly incidents.
  • Understand HPHT-specific equipment and operational requirements.
  • Be prepared to identify and mitigate HPHT risks in real-time.
  • Gain knowledge in best practices for HPHT well design and operations.

Course Agenda

The HPHT rig crew training course will focus on actual rig equipment, agreed-upon HPHT procedures, as well as reporting, organizational requirements, well design, and associated risks and mitigations. Additional topics will include the use of offset well data to optimize well control and drilling performance.

One-Day Training Schedule:

  • Managing Wellbore Behaviour: Techniques for managing wellbore stability under high pressure and temperature conditions.
  • Wellbore Monitoring: Effective monitoring methods to prevent wellbore issues.
  • Gas Behaviour: Understanding how gas behaves under HPHT conditions and its impact on well control.
  • Influx Examples: Real-world examples of influx situations and how to mitigate them.
  • Fingerprinting: Identifying and analysing wellbore characteristics through fingerprinting techniques.
  • Crew Responsibilities: Understanding the roles and responsibilities of each crew member during HPHT operations.
  • Well-Specific Risks: Identifying and managing risks specific to each well.
  • Operator-Specific Management Documentation: Understanding the necessary documentation and procedures specific to each operator.
  • Team-Based Class Exercises: Practical, hands-on exercises to reinforce learning and improve teamwork in high-pressure scenarios.
