Short Course

Course Overview

This course equips you with the skills and knowledge to develop, implement, evaluate and manage occupational health and safety management systems in the minerals and resources sector.

 

The course aligns with the industry unit of competency RIIWHS601E: Establish and Maintain the WHS management system.

 

During the course you will focus on:

  • current principles and practices of workplace health and safety, and risk management in the sector
  • the key components of health and safety management systems
  • how to evaluate the effectiveness of a health and safety management system through monitor, review and audit.​


This course is informed by:

  • New South Wales – Safety Management Systems in Mines Code of Practice
  • Western Australia – Mine Safety Management System Code of Practice
  • Queensland – Guidance Note QGN09 Reviewing the Effectiveness of Safety and Health Management Systems.

Course Content

What you'll learn

  • Identify the components of a health and safety management system based on AS/NZS ISO 45001 and legislation.
  • Identify and develop the components of an effective health and safety management system within the context of your organisation.
  • Demonstrate the ability to critique existing health and safety management, and plan for continuous improvement of the system.

 

Course Curriculum

Day 1:

You will learn about:

  • health and safety management systems, AS/NZS ISO 45001 and relevant legislations
  • the connection between health and safety management systems, and principal hazards and high-hazard industries

You will develop your health and safety management system:

  • policy, organisation and roles and responsibilities
  • resources
  • consultation and participation plan
  • objectives and improvement strategies
  • communication plan.

Day 2:

You will identify:

  • your risk management system
  • management of principal hazard management plans
  • management of health hazards (such as psychosocial or dust)
  • emergency response
  • Triggered Action Response Plans (TARPs)
  • conditions for withdrawal.

Day 3:

You will work through:

  • identifying and understanding key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • management of change
  • training, inductions and competency
  • investigation strategies and investigation management.

Day 4:

You will develop plans for:

  • contractor health and safety
  • records management
  • review, audit and continuous improvement
  • integration with operational risk management and other organisational systems.

Time commitment
This is an in-person course that will require roughly 42 hours to complete.

  • 4-day workshop
  • 10 hours of additional pre-reading using online materials

 

Assessment
You will submit 3 assessment pieces and an online quiz.

 

Certification and accreditation
Students who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion to verify their skills and achievements.

Entry requirements
There are no prerequisites for this course.

Prior completion of G3 G-MIRM Risk Management System course is recommended.
