Course Overview

This course aims to improve your understanding and practice of risk and critical control management within hazardous operational contexts.

 

In Queensland, the MISHC G-MIRM Risk Management System short course is recognised in the statutory mining competencies as equivalent to RIIRIS601E.

 

If you complete this course and achieve competency in all assessments within 6 months of course completion, you can apply for Recognition of Prior Learning to receive RIIRIS601E unit of competency from UQ Skills (RTO #1511).

Course Content

What you'll learn

  • How to describe the purpose and core processes for managing operational risks (as per ISO31000 and ICMM Critical Control Management).
  • Use of leading approaches to perform and critique risk assessment systems and risk assessments associated with the management of major risks, hazards, change and projects.
  • Use of leading approaches to perform and critique risk control analysis, implementation and verification work including critical control management.
  • How to specify options for managing, monitoring, reviewing and improving risk management system compliance and outcomes.

 

Course curriculum

Day 1: 

  • Introduction to ISO 31000​
  • ICMM Critical Control Management​
  • Introduction to the risk journey model​
  • Risk management process​
  • Introduction to human factors and human-centred design
  • The 4-layer model
  • Conducting a risk assessment

Day 2:

  • Layer 1 – broad brush risk assessment (BBRA)
  • Bowtie group activity
  • Controls and critical controls management planning

Day 3:

  • Reflection on Layer 1 and Layer 2 risk management
  • Layer 3 – Job safety analysis
  • Layer 4 – Frontline risk assessment
  • 4-layer risk assessment model – case study

Day 4:

  • AS/NZS ISO 31000​
  • Principles – application to the process​
  • Framework – application to the process​
  • Risk evaluation
  • Monitor, record and report
  • Design of the risk management system​
  • Introduction to High Reliability Organisations​

Additional Details

Time commitment
This is an in-person course that will require roughly 48 hours to complete.

  • 10 hours of study using online materials
  • 4-day workshop (8 hours per day)
  • Plus submission of 3 assignments

 

Assessment
You need to submit 3 assessment pieces within 6 months of completing this course and must achieve competency in all assessments to be eligible to apply for RIIRIS601E unit of competency from UQ Skills (RTO #1511).

 

Be aware that simply undertaking this course will not satisfy the G-MIRM unit of competency.

 

Certification and accreditation
Students who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion to verify their skills and achievements.

Entry requirements
There are no compulsory prerequisites for this course.

Knowledge of how to apply risk management processes (RIIRIS301E) is recommended.
