Course Overview

This course prepares experienced risk management personnel to facilitate effective bowtie workshops within their organisation.

 

The content includes:

 

  • preparing to conduct the bowtie workshop
  • facilitation of the scope for the workshop
  • development and critiquing of quality bowtie analyses
  • selection and definition of critical controls
  • definition of critical control specification and verification
  • tricks and traps of facilitation.


This course is co-designed by academic and industry leaders.

Course Content

What you'll learn

  • Prepare to conduct the bowtie workshop.
  • Facilitate the scope for the workshop.
  • Develop the bowtie.
  • Select and define the critical controls.
  • Define critical control specification and verification.
  • Avoid the tricks and traps of facilitation.

 

Course curriculum

Day 1: Facilitators preparation work

You will learn how to prepare to facilitate your bowtie workshops, including:

  • understanding the fundamentals of risk management and how it links to the critical control management process
  • the importance of consultation
  • the role of the facilitator and drafting information for your workshop, including preparing ghost bowties.

Day 2: Facilitating the bowtie workshop

You will learn how to create the right workshop culture by:

  • setting context, rules and expectations
  • refining the scope documentation
  • refining the bowtie knot, causes and threats, and the bowtie controls.

Day 3: Facilitating the section and definition of critical controls

You will develop the skills to:

  • review and refine the draft bowtie, controls and critical controls
  • develop control specifications and verifications, and to close out the workshop.

Additional Details

Time commitment
This is an in-person course that will require roughly 38 hours to complete.

  • 3-day workshop
  • 4 hours of study using online materials
  • 10 hours to complete the reflections (optional)

 

Assessment
You will have the option to complete 3 reflections during the workshop based on the material covered each day.

 

Certification and accreditation
Students who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion to verify their skills and achievements.

Who should attend
Risk management professionals wanting to develop their skills in effective facilitation of bowtie workshops within their organisation.

 

Entry requirements
At minimum, a knowledge of risk management processes aligned with ISO 31000 and application of risk analysis techniques.
